Description

Professional Leather Adhesion Primer for Durable Restoration

LeTech Leather Primer is a specialist, water-based adhesion promoter developed to improve the bond between leather surfaces and newly applied leather colourants.

Designed for professional leather repair and restoration, it creates a flexible, transparent intermediate layer that helps ensure excellent adhesion and long-lasting refinishing results.

Its advanced formulation is particularly beneficial when restoring heavily worn leather or areas exposed to frequent movement and friction, such as automotive seat bolsters, steering wheels and furniture armrests.

Superior Adhesion for Leather Recolouring

Correct surface preparation is essential for achieving a durable leather restoration.

Even high-quality leather colourants can fail prematurely if they are applied to a surface that has not been properly prepared.

LeTech Leather Primer improves the adhesion of subsequent coatings by creating a bonding layer between the prepared leather surface and the new colourant.

This helps reduce the risk of peeling, flaking and premature coating failure, particularly in demanding applications.

Flexible and Transparent Protection

Unlike conventional primers that may leave a heavy or rigid coating, LeTech Leather Primer forms a soft, flexible and transparent film.

This allows the leather to retain its natural movement and feel while providing an effective foundation for subsequent colourant applications.

Its transparent formulation does not interfere with the appearance of the colour applied over it, helping achieve consistent and accurate colour restoration.

Particularly Effective on High-Wear Areas

Leather surfaces exposed to repeated friction and flexing can be particularly challenging to restore.

Automotive seat bolsters, steering wheels and frequently used furniture are typical examples where strong coating adhesion is essential.

Leather Primer helps strengthen the bond between the leather and the new finishing system, improving the durability of repairs in these demanding areas.

For enhanced performance, it can be combined with compatible LeTech Cross Linker X.

Suitable Applications

LeTech Leather Primer is suitable for professional restoration and recolouring of:

  • Automotive leather seats and interiors.
  • Leather steering wheels and armrests.
  • Leather sofas, chairs and upholstery.
  • Leather footwear and clothing.
  • Leather handbags and accessories.
  • Aviation and marine leather interiors.
  • Compatible artificial and synthetic leather surfaces.
  • High-wear areas requiring improved coating adhesion.

Leather Primer forms an important part of the LeTech ExpertLine restoration system, providing a reliable foundation for Leather Colourant and subsequent protective topcoats.

Please note: Leather Primer is intended for use before recolouring. It is not a standalone leather protection treatment and is not suitable for suede or nubuck.

Instructions

How to Use LeTech Leather Primer

LeTech Leather Primer is applied after cleaning and surface preparation, but before applying Leather Colourant.

Correct preparation and application are essential for achieving strong adhesion and a durable leather finish.

Step 1 – Clean the Leather

Thoroughly clean the leather using LeTech Leather Ultimate Cleaner to remove surface dirt, body oils and other contaminants.

For heavily contaminated leather, particularly where grease or oils have penetrated the surface, use an appropriate LeTech Leather Degreaser.

Allow the leather to dry thoroughly before proceeding.

Step 2 – Prepare the Surface

Inspect the leather for damaged, loose or deteriorating coatings.

Where necessary, remove unstable finishing layers using LeTech Leather Prep or Leather Solvent Cleaner.

Once the surface has been prepared, remove remaining contamination using LeTech Leather Alcohol Cleaner or Leather Liquid Degreaser, as appropriate.

The leather must be clean, dry and free from contaminants that could interfere with adhesion.

Step 3 – Prepare Leather Primer

Shake or stir LeTech Leather Primer thoroughly before use.

For enhanced adhesion and coating performance, add 3% LeTech Cross Linker, depending on the substrate and application requirements.

Mix thoroughly to ensure the cross-linker is evenly distributed throughout the primer.

Only prepare the quantity required for immediate use.

Important: Once mixed with Cross Linker X, the prepared primer should be used within approximately three hours, according to the current product instructions.

Step 4 – Apply the First Coat

Apply a thin, even coat of Leather Primer using a suitable sponge.

Work the primer gently across the prepared surface, ensuring uniform coverage.

Dry the coating using controlled warm air from a suitable hairdryer.

Avoid overheating the leather or concentrating heat in one area.

Warm-air drying helps promote the reaction between the primer and cross-linker.

Step 5 – Apply Additional Coats

Apply further thin coats using a suitable airbrush or spray gun.

For even coverage, alternate the direction of application between coats.

For example:

  • Apply the first spray coat using vertical passes.
  • Apply the second coat using horizontal passes.
  • Apply subsequent coats using diagonal passes where required.

Dry each coat thoroughly before applying the next.

Avoid excessive application, which may affect the flexibility and natural feel of the leather.

Step 6 – Apply Leather Colourant

Once the primer has dried sufficiently, proceed with LeTech Leather Colourant.

For best results, apply the colourant soon after priming, following the recommended application instructions.

Complete the restoration by applying a suitable LeTech Leather Top Coat to provide the final protective finish.

Cleaning Equipment

Clean application tools thoroughly with water immediately after use.

Where necessary, use an appropriate LeTech cleaning product to remove remaining coating residue.

Do not allow the primer to dry inside spray equipment.

Important Information

Always test on an inconspicuous area before application.

Leather Primer should only be applied to properly prepared, compatible surfaces.

Not suitable for suede or nubuck.
